Jack Towsley – President, New Mexico Region
Jack Towsley serves as the New Mexico Region President. His focus is on improving community access to primary care and driving growth in the region by supporting the New Mexico senior leadership team. Towsley brings to Optum more than 25 years of experience as a health care executive. He is nationally recognized for his diverse experiences as a senior leader on all sides of health care (payors, physicians, hospitals, and an integrated system) and his passionate advocacy for the successful transition to value based care.

Towsley earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and a Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. Jack and his family enjoy time together and the Albuquerque quality of life.

Ryan Tyner, MD, FACS, Chief Medical Officer

Prior to joining Optum, Dr. Ryan Tyner was an advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgical attending physician at Brooke Army Medical Center, where he served as the Director and Officer in Charge of the center’s Breast Cancer Center.  He also practiced at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio and the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Dr. Tyner earned his Bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Chemistry from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and his medical degree, with honors, at New York Medical College in Valhalla.  He completed his post-graduate residency at Wilford Hall, where he became board certified in General Surgery.  From there, Dr. Tyner went on to complete specialized training in minimally invasive and Bariatric surgery, and was subsequently elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).  Dr. Tyner’s professional associations include the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons.  He has also earned the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Oak Leaf, and the NATO Service Medal with Oak Leaf with the United States Military, following two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Dr. Tyner continues to practice minimally invasive surgery with the Optum General and Bariatric Surgery Department.  He believes that in order to provide clinical leadership as the organization’s Chief Medical Officer, he must stay closely connected to the work that our doctors do every day.  He brings to the administrative team a wealth of knowledge and expertise in his clinical field, applying that in the business setting to continue the advancement and improvement of healthcare for the people of New Mexico.

Dr. Tyner is a New Mexico native and is passionate about helping his community.  In his free time, he enjoys cooking and spending time with his wife and their four fur kids.

Lorna Bomgaars, CPA, Chief Financial Officer

Bomgaars serves as Chief Financial Officer for Optum New Mexico.  Her passion for wellness and preventive care drives her love of healthcare.  As a member of the executive leadership team, Bomgaars is responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies, operating and capital budgets, and financial reporting and internal controls that support the overall mission of the organization--affordable, high-quality care.

Bomgaars brings more than 25 years of financial, accounting, corporate development, and leadership experience to the team.  Prior to joining Optum, she held progressive leadership roles at Crossroads Consulting Partners, Rio Tinto, UnitedGlobalCom, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.  She holds undergraduate degrees in Business Administration and Accounting & Management Information Systems.

In her free time, Bomgaars enjoys hiking and camping with her husband and their four children.  They also enjoy cheering their kids on at their various sports activities.

Bindu Purushothaman – Chief Information Officer
Bindu Purushothaman is Chief Information Officer (CIO), and she brings to Optum over 20 years of experience in information technology. She oversees the IT team as well as the Medical Records team. She is passionate about healthcare and believes that technology has a crucial role in transforming today’s healthcare delivery model, meeting the demands of today’s tech savvy consumers, while improving the quality of care. As a part of the Optum national leadership team, Purushothaman plays a central role in the medical group’s national technology strategy and innovation efforts.

Purushothaman has a Bachelor of Electronics Engineering degree, and a Master’s in Computer Science. She also currently serves as Treasurer on the New Mexico Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Board of Directors.

Michael Wallace, Vice President, Growth & Strategy

Michael Wallace is the Vice President of Growth & Strategy for Optum. As part of the executive leadership team, he is accountable for multiple lanes, including business development, contracting, membership, government affairs, and real estate. Michael is a New Mexico native with more than 15 years of experience in health care policy, strategy, negotiation, underwriting, and quality-based program development and implementation. He is driven by a desire to take part in the transformation of health care in our state to ensure patient-centered, results-oriented care is available for all New Mexicans.

Michael is involved in the community and serves on the board of the New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry, the New Mexico Philharmonic, Saranam, and is chairman of the board for Solare Collegiate Charter School. He has a Bachelor of Communication from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Health Administration from the University of New Mexico. He is a Leadership New Mexico Graduate and was recognized as one of Albuquerque’s 40 under Forty.

In his free time, Michael seeks out adventures with his significant other- previous escapades have included building a fire via bow drill on their front porch, backpacking through Ecuador, and of course, the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge.

Joseph Lucero – Vice President of Network Management, New Mexico Region

Joseph Lucero is the Vice President of Network Management and brings over 15 years of experience in healthcare and analytics. Joseph oversees the Network Management team and Optum Care Network. Optum Care Network is focused on growing Optum’s footprint in the community through affiliate provider partnerships. His passion in healthcare is to leverage the power of data to advance value-based care and bring sustainability to healthcare in New Mexico.

Joseph has a Bachelor’s in Business Computer Systems from New Mexico State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of New Mexico. Joseph is a New Mexico native and enjoys spending free time in the outdoors, camping and with his family.

Dr. Michael Bergeron, Senior Medical Director

Dr. Bergeron has over 25 years of experience in the practice of Family Medicine.  He is also an experienced leader in the transformation of healthcare, and is passionate about improving not only the patient's quality of care, but their overall experience as well.  He wants patients to feel more connectedness with their doctors and care teams, and he wants them to have the timely access to care that they deserve.

Dr. Bergeron earned his Bachelor's degree, Cum Laude, in Biology from St. Michael's College in Burlington, Vermont and his Medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire.  He went on to complete his post-graduate residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine.  Dr. Bergeron is board certified in Family Medicine and also holds an Executive MBA in Healthcare from Brandeis University in Massachusetts.  Dr. Bergeron's professional associations include, the American Association of Family Practice, and he is active on the Board of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association.

In addition to being part of the senior leadership team, Dr. Bergeron continues to practice Family Medicine alongside his colleagues at Optum.  He understands that the best way to improve healthcare for patients and doctors is to live it.  In his free time, Dr. Bergeron enjoys hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities.  His hobbies include classic cars and woodworking.

John Good, MD, FAAP - Medical Director

Dr. Good has been with the group for over 18 years, first as a practicing Pediatrician, and more recently as a Medical Director over Pediatrics and Primary Care.  As a Medical Director, Good partners closely with our Patient Experience Sr. Director to help enhance the overall patient experience.  Good consistently receives top accolades from his patients' families, and he takes pride in helping his colleagues to achieve the same.

After graduating from both medical school and residency from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Good worked as a General Pediatrician with St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe for almost 5 years.  Good is a board certified Pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  He is still a practicing Pediatrician at Optum's Rio Rancho clinic, and is quite popular with his patients.  Good has also worked in Clinical Research at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and is a contributing author to The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult.  Prior to entering the field of medicine, he studied Art History at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Good and his wife are the proud parents of 4 children.  Most of their free time is taken up with their kids' many different activities and interests, but they wouldn't have it any other way!  Any time they have left over is spent resting and enjoying each other's company.

Eugene Sun, MD, MBA – Medical Director Network Performance

Dr. Sun is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico and is trained and board certified in Internal Medicine. He has over 30 years of experience in primary care, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and managed care. Much of his career has been focused on improving access to timely and quality care for patients.

Dr. Sun earned his bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in Claremont, California and his medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He later received a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society.

As Medical Director for Network Performance, Dr. Sun works with Optum Care partner practices to develop and implement initiatives to improve access to care and quality patient outcomes.

Dr. Sun serves on the Board of Directors of the Roadrunner Food Bank for several years and he is passionate about giving back to the community and helping fellow New Mexicans in need.

Joanna Perez – Sr. Director Care Management

Joanna Perez has over 20 years of clinical experience across many specialties, including as a nationally certified emergency nurse. Currently she supports and oversees prior authorization, utilization and case and disease management functions for our MA risk populations. She began her career with ABQ Health Partners in 2006 and has served in a variety of positions. Joanna’s passion for improving health care quality across our community drives her to improve care through care management activities not just for her family, but all New Mexicans. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Chamberlain University.

Jason Caldwell, Senior Director, Clinical Operations – Primary Care & Risk Adjustment

Jason Caldwell is passionate about value-based care and how aligned incentives benefit the health of New Mexicans, focusing on patient access and quality outcomes for complex primary care patients. Jason has more than 15 years of experience in accounting, healthcare finance and healthcare administration. Previously Jason worked in public accounting with Moss Adams LLP and surgical services administration with Presbyterian Healthcare Services. Caldwell earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in Accounting, both from the University of New Mexico. Jason loves spending time outdoors with his family and decompressing on his mountain bike.

Jillian Springer, FACHE– Director, Clinical Operations – Specialty Care Services

Jillian Springer is responsible for the operations and strategy for medical and surgical specialty care. With more than a decade of diverse experience in acute, ambulatory, and post-acute care, she is focused on ensuring we provide affordable, high-quality care. Previously she held progressive leadership roles at Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente. She earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Born and raised in New Mexico, Springer is grateful to serve her home community and enjoys spending time with her family exploring the beautiful outdoors.
